The Northern Virginia Chapter of the Azalea Society of America will hold its annual azalea auction on Sunday, Sept. 12, inside the new Merrifield Gardent Center in GAINESVILLE, VA.  The event will begin at 1:30 with a social and "silent"  auction to be followed by "live" auction. There will be dozens of ready-to-plant evergreen and native azaleas. There is no admission fee and no membership is required to participate. The entire event is open to the public. Shimizu, Executive Director, US Botanic Garden will present a lecture on the Sustainable Sites Initiative of the Architect of the Capitol, the US Botanic Garden in conjunction with the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Together these agencies are developing the
first national guidelines and performance benchmarks for landscapes and gardens. Ms. Shimizu will talk about this effort and answer our questions about sustainable landscapes and the ways in which these guidelines will transform the landscape industry.

Dr. Holly Scoggins, Associate Professor and Director of
the Hahn Horticulture Center at Virginia Tech, will pro-
vide an entertaining look at perennial plants suitable for a va-
riety of conditions, from shade to sun and wet to dry. Her
recommendations mix workhorse favorites and exciting new
varieties plus some sure-fire combinations and maintenance
tips. Dr. Scoggins teaches courses in floriculture crops pro-
duction, herbaceous landscape plants, greenhouse manage-
ment, and public gardens maintenance and management. Her
research interests include improving production systems for
herbaceous perennials with an emphasis on mineral nutrition
and rhizosphere management.

The roundtable will hear first hand experiences, successes and failures from underserved outreach efforts in Philadelphia.
